A. For All Spells -Before you begin any spell work, you must get into the right frame of mind. Take a ritual bath and add 2 table spoons of sea salt to the water. This will help you to relax. Then meditate on the spell that you are about to perform, for a few minutes. After you are focused and relaxed and begin your spell work.

B. Candle Spells- Before using candles in a spell each candle must be charged & annointed with annointing oil (olive oil will do). This is done by placing some of the oil on your fingertips. Grasp the candle at its midpoint with your left hand, and use your right index finger and thumb to stroke oil on the candle from the midpoint up to the top of the candle. Next, grasp the candle at its midpoint with your right hand, and use your left index finger and thumb to stroke oil on the candle from the midpoint down to the bottom of the candle. Continue with this until the entire candle has been annointed. While annointing your candle, visualize the purpose of your magickal undertaking. As you continue to stroke your candle concentrate on sending your energy down your arms, wrists, hands, and fingers, and from your fingers into the candle. Continue doing this until you feel that you are ready to take the next step. Your candle has now been charged with your personal energy and magickal intent. Repeat this proceedure with each candle you use in a spell. Always use fresh unused candles in your spells.

Casting Circles and Calling Quarters

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The circle is the sacred space in which magick is worked, where Witches can meet with the Goddess and God. The word "circle" may be misleading, though, because actually what you are creating is a sphere that encompasses all participants and the altar.
The magick circle defines the ritual area, holds in personal power and shuts out all distractions and negative energies.
You can use objects on the ground to show the boundaries of the circle, such as stones, flowers, branches, candles (my favorite) or crystals. You don't have to use anything to mark the boundaries of the circle, if you don't wish to. Those are just suggestions.
The circle is formed with personal power which is felt and visualized as streaming from the body to form what, to me, ends up looking like a bubble made of mist. Some use their athame, or magick knife, to direct this power, others use their hands.
Once the energy is flowing through your fingertips or athame, walk the circle clockwise, envisioning the mist (or bubble, or light, or whatever works for you) trailing outward from you to form the sphere. When the circle is completed, shut off the energy by shaking your hand or simply pulling the energy back into yourself.

Once the circle is cast, you are ready to call the quarters if you wish.
There are many different energies and beings that can be called, summoned or stirred to protect the circle or witness your ritual - from watchtowers to angels to faeries to elementals to element energies.
No matter which type of quarter call you use, when working with quarters, envision a door or opening of some kind and visualize the energy or being that will be coming through that door to guard the circle.
All quarter energies should be thanked and released in the same manner they were called.
I'll give you an example of the type of quarter call I use during New Moon rituals. As I call each quarter, I face that direction and hold out my athame with both hands, feeling the energy from that element flowing into me:

To the East, I invite the powers of Air
To blow out the old and bring in the new
on your winds of change

To the South, I invite the powers of Fire
To burn away regrets
And shine your gentle rays upon me for growth

To the West, I invite the powers of Water
To cleanse me of negativity
And purify my thoughts

To the North, I invite the powers of Earth
Let your renewing strength bury all ills
And open new paths before me

I like to use elemental energies during quarter calls, although I sometimes use angelic energies. Because the New Moon is a time for new beginnings, you'll notice that my quarter calls reflect the type of magick that will be worked inside the circle
Do some research and get to know the energy you will be using. If you use elemental energies, take some time to meditate on each element and figure out its properties and correspondences.
When you are finished with your spell or ritual, release the circle exactly opposite of the way you cast it. Pull the circle back into your athame or whatever tool you used in your casting, and release and thank any spirits or elementals you called.
There are literally thousands of ways to call quarters and cast circles. I've just given you an overview, because it's always best to figure out what works for you. I work very well with element energies, but you might have an affinity for something else. A good book to read on casting circles is Silver Ravenwolf's "To Stir a Magick Cauldron", which can be ordered from my Recommended Reading page.

Moon Phase Correspondences for Magickal Workings:

I'd suggest purchasing a Magickal or Witches' Almanac to keep up with the moon phases; they can be found in the New Age section of almost any large bookstore and are fairly inexpensive. I have both Llewellyn's Magical Almanac ($6.95) and The Witches' Almanac (also $6.95)

New Moon Magick:
New Moon workings can be done from the day of the new moon to three-and-a-half days after.
The new moon is for starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and romance, health or job hunting.

Waxing Moon Magick:
From seven to fourteen days after the new moon.
The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or health.

Full Moon Magick:
From fourteen to seventeen-and-a-half days after the new moon.
Prime time for rituals for prophecy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams.

Waning Moon Magick:
From three-and-a-half to ten-and-a-half days after the full moon.
The waning moon is used for banishing magick, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity.

Dark Moon Magick:
From ten-and-a-half to fourteen days after the full moon.
The dark moon is a time for dealing with attackers, for exploring our darkest recesses and understanding our angers and passions. Also bringing justice to bear.

A Witch's Magickal Herbal
There are many herbs that can be used for magickal purposes; I've elected to list only those that could be found in an ordinary kitchen or can be easily found at a grocery store or nursery. I live in an apartment, but I was able to make a small herb garden that sits outside on my balcony.
Herbs are wonderful for magick - they can be burned or tied up in sachets or made into amulets to wear. (I am not recommending that you ingest any of these herbs)

Anise: purification, protection, keeps away nightmares
Basil: purification, protection, exorcism, love, prosperity
Chamomile: prosperity, meditation, calmness
Cinnamon: psychic powers, protection, success, healing, clairvoyance, prosperity
Dill: seeds draw money and protection, the flowers are used for love

Cast the circle

Invocation of the God and Goddess

Statement of intent
On this night, I invoke the powers of fire to protect me from all that would harm me, whether physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually.

Start at the south.Light the candle, shouting:
Nothing from the South can harm me!
Imagine the flame creating a wall of protection on that side of you

Move West, light the candle and shout:
Nothing from the West can harm me!
Again, with each candle you light, imagine the wall around you growing in power and intensity

North, light the candle and shout:
Nothing from the North can harm me!

East, light the candle, shouting:
Nothing from the East can harm me!

Hold up the Southern candle to the sky, shouting:
Nothing from above can harm me!

Place it back on the earth, shouting:
Nothing from below can harm me!

Sit in the center of the circle, watching the candles burn.
Know that the fires are burning away all evil and harm that comes your way.
Meditate on the flames and feel their power forming a shield around you - a shield you can erect anytime you feel threatened.

Cakes and ale (eating bread and drinking wine or juice to restore energies spent during ritual)

Release circle
Thank the Goddess and God for their protection and presence in your circle
Go to each of the four directions in turn, saying:
Guardians of the East (South, West, North),
Powers of Air (Fire, Water, Earth),
I thank you for joining in my circle
And I ask for your blessing
As you depart
May there be peace between us
Now and forever.
Blessed be.

Raise your athame to the sky and touch it to the earth, then open your arms and say:
The circle is open, but unbroken,
May the peace of the Lord and Lady
Go in my heart
So Mote it Be!

Prosperity spell

This spell is best worked on a Sunday or a Thursday during the waxing moon.

Tools
Cauldron with burning charcoal inside
basil, chamomile and sage (all are herbs associated with prosperity)
Cup of water
Dish of salt or earth
Athame or wand

Cast the circle however you choose.
Invite the Lord and Lady to your circle in whatever manner is most comfortable to you.

Cast the herbs onto the burning charcoal while visualizing your goal - whether it be bills that you need to pay or whatever reason you are seeking financial help.
Sprinkle a few drops of water and salt or earth upon the charcoal.
As you move your athame or wand over the cauldron clockwise, to blend the energies, say:
"By the powers of air, fire, water and earth, I release this spell. I ask for Divine guidance as I seek help this day. With harm to none, this spell be done."
Spend a few moments in meditation, visualizing the smoke from the cauldron carrying the energies out of the circle and into the universe.

Thank the Lord and Lady for the assistance in your magickal working.
Release the circle.
Ground and center yourself.

Tool Consecration

Tools
Incense (in the east)
White candle (in the south)
Small bowl of water (in the west)
Small bowl of salt or earth (in the north)
Cast the circle

Before these spirits, I bring (name of tool) to be dedicated to the service of the Lady and the Lord.

Pass the tool three times through the smoke of the incense, saying:
By power of air, be purified.
Be dedicated to purity, that all goals you help acheive may harm none and be for good of all.

Pass the tool three times through the flame of the candle, saying:
By power of fire, be purified.
Be dedicated to desire, that all goals you help acheive may harm none and be for good of all.

Sprinkle a few drops of water on the instrument, saying:
By power of water, be purified.
Be dedicated to emotion, that you be used in a spirit of harmony, harming none and for good of all.

Touch instrument to the earth or salt, saying:
By power of earth, be purified.
Be dedicated to steadfastness, that my will be acheived without wavering, with harm to none and for good of all.

Presentation to the Lord and Lady
If this is a chalice, present it first to the Lady, then to the Lord. If it is an athame, reverse the order. All other instruments, use your own preference, but it is a courtesy to present to Her first.
Presentation of Chalice
Lady, bless this chalice, let it be a vessel of productivity that may be worthy to reside in circle with you.
Let it be so bound that no harm may come of it to any being.
To thy service, I dedicate this vessel, that it and I may be long of service to thee.
Lord, bless this chalice that it may bring forth joy and purity.
Guard the works which come forth from it, that they harm none and be ever in the service of thee.
So Mote it Be!

Presentation of Athame
Great Lord, bless this athame. Let it be pure for thy service and bind it so that no harm may come of it to any being.
Lord, bless this athame, that it be used always in the worship and honor of the One.
Lady, bless this athame that it may bring forth joy and purity, and shall cause no harm to any being.
I dedicate this athame to thy service, Great One.
So Mote it Be!

Release the circle

Binding

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of this spell is to rid yourself of the negative energies of someone who is mentally or emotionally abusing you. If done properly, it will not harm the object of the spell nor will it affect his or her daily life in any way. It will simply make the person powerless to mentally or emotionally harm you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Materials:
Small cloth doll, leave the head unstitched until you are ready to begin the ritual
Needle and thread
Some personal item from the person you want to bind (fingernail clippings, hair, handwriting sample)
Black ribbon
Black candle
Cauldron or other fireproof container
Sterilized needle
Piece of paper and pen
One candle at each quarter (optional)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ritual:
Call the quarters - I like to use candles at each quarter to form a circle of fire for extra protection.
Light the black candle
Concentrating deeply on the person you are binding, place the personal object inside the head of the doll and sew it shut.
Tie the black ribbon around the poppet's head, signifying the binding of that person.
''With harm to none, my will be done
I hereby bind you (name of person)
Your words cannot harm me
Your thoughts cannot harm me
You cannot harm me''
Continue chanting this or something like it until you feel power surging through you. Visualize the person helpless to slander or verbally and mentally abuse you while you are chanting.
Now, to bind the spell -
If you have a sigil or a Craft name, sign it on the small piece of paper. If not, sign your own full name. If others are working the ritual with you, they too should sign the paper.
With the sterilized needle, prick one of your fingers and put a small drop of blood over your signature. Again, if others are working with you, they should place a drop of blood over their signatures. (using a different needle, of course)
Fold the paper, light it on fire and drop it into the cauldron (which should be on a heat-proof surface!).
Meditate on the flames until the paper completely burns away. If you are working with a group, join hands at this point and feel the power surging around the circle as the spell is bound.
Ground and center
Release the circle. Thank the Goddess and God for their protection and power
Bury the doll as far away from you as possible within the next few days.

Writing your own spells and rituals

I get a lot of requests for spells; "can you send me a spell to do this?" or "can you give me a ritual for this holiday?"
The short answer is, yes, I can, but I won't. Before you start thinking that sounds mean, let me explain: The reason I don't hand out out spells is because I firmly believe all Witches should write their own.
There is nothing wrong with using spells in books or on web pages, as long as they are used as guidelines for writing your own spell.
There are many reasons for this. A lot of new Witches might try a spell word-for-word out of a book and not know what many components of the spell mean or what they are for. Therefore, the spell will not work. It's not the words you say that make the spell work, it's the intent and the energy. If you don't know the meaning of what you are doing, how can it be an effective spell?
If you write your own spell or ritual, you will know the meaning and significance of every word and action contained in that spell, thus your magickal working will be full of power.
Following is a short "recipe" for writing your own spells and rituals. It includes many questions you will need to answer before working your spell. Many answers to the questions are found on my web page; others are found in books or in other web pages.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Know the Basics
Know what magick is. Know different ways to raise, direct and ground energy. Know how to cast a magick circle. Know how to open a circle. Know the basic outline of a spell.

Know the Intent or Purpose
What is it you are trying to do? Heal an illness? Increase your concentration? Bring love into your life? Sell a house? Celebrate a Sabbat? Before you begin any magickal working, you should have a firm grasp on what outcome you are seeking.

Know the Best Time to Work the Spell
Do you know what type of magick should be worked during the waning moon and what type during the waxing moon? What type of magick is best worked on the full moon? The new moon? What days of the week are best for what types of magick? Learn how the moon phases and days of the week affect magickal workings so you will know when to work your spell.

Know Correspondences
Learn which colors will bring what results. Learn a little about herbalism; which herbs can be used for what magickal purposes. Learn about image magick and how it works. Learn about elemental magick; which elements can be used for what types of magick.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic Working Spell Outline

Ritual Preparation
Choose a time. Decide the intent. Choose an aspect of the Divine, if you wish. Decide how to raise energy (ie: dance, chanting, drumming, etc.) Choose how to cast and close the circle.

Cleanse yourself and your magickal space.
You can do this with a ritual bath for yourself, or through meditation to still and focus your mind. You can cleanse your space with your magickal broom or with incense or burning herbs.

Cast the Circle

Invocation of the Divine

Statement of purpose
This is simply to tell the Divine why you have called Him/Her to the circle; what you are trying to accomplish.

Magickal Working
Raise energy, through chanting or drumming or however you have chosen to do so. Direct or channel this energy by using candles, herbs, stones or whatever other correspondences you found to fit your specific need. Ground your energy when you have completed the working.

Cakes and Wine
Eat a small piece of bread or cookie and drink a little wine, milk or juice to help restore your energy.

Thanking the Divine

Closing the Circle

North
The North is the direction of Earth and rock. It is the direction of the solid base upon which we build ourselves. The Great Spirits of the North bring strength, stability, and dependability to our lives. The strengths of White magic and of our very lives depend upon the strength of our souls. It is the earth which gives us the food we eat; from the plants we grow, to the animals which we hunt. The North teaches us to have a soul of the strongest ingredient, Truth. I say this because stone cannot lie. A liar may say and even believe that a stone is not a particular shape, color, etc., but that does not change the facts about the stone. The stones of our lives, our souls, were created by the greatest force of all: The Lord and The Lady in their great union. When one is feeling spread out over the four winds and the troubles and problems of our lives rule over us, we often refer to the process of stabilizing ourselves as 'putting our feet on the ground' or 'grounding'. This is the reason the circle is best started from the North, the Great Spirits of the North help us to ground ourselves and to concentrate our efforts. The lesson of the North is: Live - each and every day.

East
East is the direction of light. It symoblizes knowledge, true love, peace and harmony. Life as we know it would not be possible without light. When one is feeling left out, confused, etc., one must first ground one's self. When properly grounded, one begins looking to the East for guidance to illuminate the proper path. When a path is shown, that path must be carefully considered at first. It is easy for us as humans to imagine a path being shown when in actuality we are shining ourselves forward into the darkness. At this point The Challenge of The Law comes into play. The one lesson which must be learned individually is to learn to listen. Learn to listen to that 'little voice' inside of you... the one which never leads you wrong. With practice, one may learn to tell the difference between the voice of the intuition and that of the reasoning mind, between the voice of the soul whispering the proper path and that of latent desires for power and control. This is the same voice which diviners use to learn the past, present, and future of the querrant. The lesson of East is: Love - and you will find the path of Truth.

South
The ancient Europeans knew that when one wanted to escape the bitter cold winters of the North, one headed South. Therefore, it only seemed logical that the symbol of South is flame. Fire makes rapid and sure changes in materials. It can make equally sure change in a soul. Farmers and ranchers often burn areas of fields to clear away unwanted or detremental growth. This burning converts the weeds into potash - a required nutrient. This analogy can easily be applied to the path toward The Truth. Our lives often become overgrown with weeds and brambles from daily pressures. At times it becomes necessary to 'burn' through all of this, but it must be done with caution. A rancher does not simply head out to the field, throw a match to the ground and let it burn. Instead, the rancher will first find which area of land must be cleared, then s/he will watch the weather for a few days to be sure that the wind is not blowing too hard nor from the wrong direction. Then, and only then, after much consideration will s/he light the match... and ony then with plenty of friends to help control the flames. When one is grounded and has found the proper path, one looks to the South to find the power to make the necessary changes. Often the changes are very rapid, other times they are slower, more measured. Regardless of the speed of the change, one must always temper the changes of the South with the wisdom of the East and the Water of the West. The fire of the South is the way in which our souls are brought to the path of White magic. It is better to have several small rapid changes than to try to blast away at what is wrong with your life and change too much too quickly. When in doubt, make a small but definite change. The lesson of the South is: Learn - and make carefully thought out changes for the better.

West
The West is the direction of water. The West has three functions: 1) to control the fires of the South, 2) to execute slow and measured changes, and 3) the cleansing of our hearts, our minds, our bodies, and our souls. The changes brought about by the energies of the South can be a glorious and wonderful thing... or very very destructive. This is why The Dieties have provided for us the energies of the West. When the 'burning' of the overgrowth threatens our well being, the waters can quickly douse the fires. Unless you are addicted to something, it is usually not wise to make such radical changes in our lives that those around us quickly become alienated.* Instead, slow measured changes are usually more appropriate. One example of the power of water in this area is the Grand Canyon. Over many millions of years a single running stream of water (which is not particularly large) has eroded hundreds of thousands of tons of solid rock. The White magician knows that the Great Spirits of the West control the elemental waters and The Deities control the Great Spirits. Therefore, the White magician knows that when s/he simply lets the waters change his soul that it is truly the Will of the Deities at work. This is what is meant when the bumper stcker reads: "Let go - Let God." This 'live and let live' attitude does not mean that the White magician does not get tired and frustrated. It is at those times when the lesson of the West comes gleaming into his/her mind and the White magician smiles then lets go. S/he has learned to enjoy life and to always look forward to the next reward. The lesson of the West is this: Enjoy - your life is in the greatest of hands, let them shape you into your true form.

* In that case, the change should be as fast and as hard in the direction of help as possible. Forget who's feelings are hurt... if they were really your friends they would be fighting to get you the help you need.

Cast a circle.

Call the corners

Envision the desired effect (i.e. chat "protect me" over and over)

Envision a ball of light growing in intensity (this is called 'raising power')

Release the ball when it has reached its fullest intensity (this is called 'sending power')

Touch the ground with your hands (this is called 'grounding' and is VERY important to do)

Thank the Goddess

To Find Love

This spell should be performed on the first Friday after the New Moon. To work this spell you will need the following items: two pink candles, annointing oil (a mixture of Rose, Lavendar, and Jasmine oils), a piece of rose quartz, incense and nine red rose buds.

Start by lighting the incense. Next, take one of the pink candles and hold it in your hands. Visualize your need and desire to find love. Next annoint your candle with the oil that you have made. Pick up the next pink candle and hold it in your hands. Visualize the type of person you desire to be with (not a specific person for that would be black magick). Think about the traits that you are looking for in a mate. After you have finished your visualization, annoint the candle following the steps above. Place the pink candles on your altar in holders . Place the rose quartz in between the two candle. Encircle the two candle holders with the nine rose buds. Light the two candles and visualize yourself in a loving relationship with the perfect mate. Continue this visualization as long as possible. Allow your candles to burn down completely. Keep on your person one of the rose buds and the rose quartz to reinforce your magickal intention. Discard the eight remaining rose buds toutdoors, as an offering. The spell is finished. In time you will achieve the desired results.

Casting a Circle

From the book "Power of the Witch" by Laurie Cabot

1. Remove all animals and small children from the area and any furniture that you do not want to be inside your circle.

2. Set up your altar before you cast the circle.

3. Locate magnetic north with a compass and, holding the wand out from your body, go into alpha and see the wand's aura extending out from it, especially at the tip.

4. Visualize the tip of the wand creating a circle of light and energy, like a lazer, as you walk clockwise three times around the area. The circumference drawn by the wand's tip will be the edge of your circle. Project white light out from the wand to create the circle of energy. In your mind see the circle as geometrically perfect and say to yourself that it is.

5. Walk the circle the second time around and say out loud, "I cast this circle to protect me / us from all negative and positive energies and forces on any level that may come to do me / us harm. I draw into this circle only the energies and forces that are right for me / us and the most correct for my / our work."

6. Walk the circle the third time and say, "I create sacred space. So mote it be."

7. Invoke the four directions and the energies of the elements, angels, and powers that reside in them by using the athame, wand, sword, or index finger to draw an invoking pentagram as you face each direction. Use a ritual spell of invocation or one you write for yourself.

8. To open a circle hold the wand out over the circumference of the circle and, beginning at magnetic north, walk once around the circle counterclockwise as you say, "I send this circle into the cosmos to do my / our bidding. The circle is undone but not broken."
