A Deeper Understanding of the Holocaust

Schindler's List, a movie about the activities of Oskar Schindler during WWII, is a film where much about life can be conjured from. The movie reveals a period in the past century where evil prevailed, only to be rendered by the good of humanity. Schindler, the films heroine, was initially portrayed as an opportunist who profited at the expense of others. However, as the film progressed, Schindler evolved into a man who used his power to help those destined for tragedy. Much can be drawn upon from Schindler's List, including why intelligent people use their intelligence to harm others, vital lessons in life, and the answer to whether good can arise from evil.
In the movie, Schindler's List, intelligent people use their intelligence to harm and take advantage of others. The Nazis, represented by the army and its officers, are depicted as a group that were eager to capitalize on their power. In the movie, Amon Goeth is the main representation of the Nazis and their views. Amon was merciless towards the Jews, and not only sought for the suffering and the depletion of the Jews, but took pleasure from doing so. He was a womanizer, alcoholic, capitalist"¦all of which Schindler was. Amon and Schindler were also both very intelligent and very powerful. However, that is where their course of similarities end. Schindler did profit from the Jews, but gave back every penny in the end. He cared about the Jews and valued their lives, unlike Amon Goeth. One must wonder why Schindler used his power to benefit others and why Amon used his to harm others. The answer revolves around one thing"¦the heart. Amon did not value anyones life besides his own. He was self-centered and lacked a good heart. He was bad from the inside out, which was radiated by his views and his actions. Schindler initially looked out for his best interest, but it was his good heart which prevailed in the end. He was a good man who used his intelligence to enjoy the things in life that you can always get from materialistic things.
Schindlers List not only provided information on a period of history, but provided insight. One that is familiar with history is probably familiar with the Holocaust. However, Schindler's List goes deeper than history books in that it gives the details. It shows the extreme suffering of the Jews, who lost their jobs, families, life, and worst of all"¦hope. It is easy to say that the Jews suffered greatly without truly understanding the inhumane circumstances that took place. The movie seeks to reproduce a part of history that should not be forgotten or taken at face value. People suffered for invalid reasons and that type of suffering should never occur again. Lessons to be learned from Schindlers List are abundant. One lesson to be learned is that hate will only have negative effects. An example of that would be the fall of the Nazis, who demonstrated much hate for the Jews. A second lesson that could be learned from the movie is that good does prevail. Oskar Schindler is the prime example of that lesson, whose good heart prevailed in the end. The final lesson is that you cant change history, but you can learn from it. By presenting the Holocaust more deeply, one can gain enriched understanding and prevent it from happening again.
The movie shows that good can arise out of evil, but does not always. Schindler demonstrated by his change of actions that good can come out of evil, but Amon Goeth did not. Schindler, through his generosity and compassion for the Jews, saved the lives of many. Although I would never label Schindler "evil," his intentions in the beginning were "bad" and self serving. Amon, who could have refrained from unnecessary slayings of the Jews, never showed any compassion for them. Amon had the power at one point to be a better person and "˜pardon' Jews. Though he tried at first, he never ended up following through with the notion. Good could have come out of evil in that situation, but did not. In the end of the movie, when Schindler offered a great sum of money to Amon for some Jews, Amon had different reasons than Schindler for agreeing to the terms. Though Amons intentions were to benefit himself, good did arise from his decision. Many lives were saved, showing that good can prevail even in the most evil situations. Thus, good can arise from evil, but does not always.
Schindlers List is a movie that provides insight on a period of history where much can be learned from. Schindlers List, through its enriched detail of the Holocaust, provided many lessons and things that can be conjured about in life. It showed why intelligent people use their intelligence to harm others, vital lessons in life, and an answer to whether good can arise from evil. Through the use of the Jews and their experiences and lives of Oskar Schindler and Amon Goeth, much form Schindlers List can be drawn upon and learned about in life.
