Life, when does it really begin? Dr. Landrum Shettles, sometimes called, "The Father of In Vitro Fertilization" notes, "Conception confers life and makes that life one of a kind." And on the Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade, "To deny a truth [about when life begins] should not be made a basis for legalizing abortion." Legalizing abortion is taking a life, and should have never been considered to be legalized. It should be considered more murder than anything else. Not only does abortion take the unborn fetus's life, it has many consequences on the mother and the father.
Abortions are thought to be safe because they are legal. Many women receive unsafe abortions done by abortion practitioners. Long term effects of abortions can be horrific for the women getting the abortion. Women can experience complications in future pregnancies. Complications include: excessive bleeding, premature delivery, cervical damage, and sterility. The worst complication of all is death.
An abortion can destroy a couple's relationship. In cases of women who decided to have an abortion, research has found 70% of the relationships break up within one month of the abortion. In almost every relationship that the couple was unmarried, the couple broke up before or after the abortion.
Child abuse actually rose after abortions were made legal in the United States in 1973. In that year, there were 167,000 cases of child abuse and neglect reported. However, in 1980, there were 785,100 cases reported, and furthermore, in 1987, there were 2,025,200 cases reported. Rather than helping stop abuse, abortions contribute to the amount of child abuse cases. There is evidence that after a women chooses to have an abortion, she has a strong feeling of guilt long after her abortion. Guilt is one important cause of child abuse. There are studies that link parents with a major loss if self-esteem in battering parents and how abortions lowers a women's self- esteem are related.
During the time of Roe v. Wade one of the arguments against legalized abortion was how abortion can lead to violence. Abortion can lead to many serious acts of violence toward life. Such acts abortion can entice are euthanasia, infanticide, and other acts of destruction.
In conclusion, abortions should not be legal. There are many after effects that can occur from one abortion. Psychological effects on the mother are horrendous and her physical health can be altered for the worse as a result.
